M31 - The Andromeda Galaxy

M31 is a spectacular spiral galaxy visible with the naked eye from dark viewing sites. It is approximately 2.5 million light years from us and is thought to be around 20% larger than our own Milky Way galaxy.
The spiral arms and dust lanes can be easily seen in long-exposure photographs, such as the one above, as can its two companion dwarf galaxies M32 and M110
