Elite: Dangerous is the long-awaited next game in the Elite series, coded by Frontier Developments under the watchful eye of owner and Elite co-creator David Braben.

This is the fourth game in the Elite series, after Elite, Frontier: Elite 2 and Frontier: First Encounters. It is effectively Elite 4.

Following a successful Kickstarter campaign the game's release took place on 16th December 2014.

The PC version of the game was released in December 2014, with a Mac version in 2015 (since discontinued). Console versions followed, for PS4 and Xbox.

The major departure from previous games in the Elite series was the introduction of a multi-player option, as well as the ability to play alone.

The initial release of the game did not include planetary landings, which featured in the Frontier games. This aspect was added with the release of Elite: Dangerous - Horizons in December 2015.

Given the processing power of current computers, Elite: Dangerous promises to be a seminal product within the gaming world. Star systems based in reality are included, making the game more like Frontier than Elite. The ship control, however, is a combination of the Newtonian style of Frontier and the arcade style of Elite.

In May 2021 an expansion called Elite Dangerous Odyssey was released which allowed players to explore the game world on foot and visit previously inaccessible parts of space stations and ground settlements. However a number of gameplay and technical issues blighted this release for some considerable time.

In March 2022 it was announced that further development on the console versions of the game had been abandoned.
