NGC 7000 - The North American Nebula

Copyright: Adam Block/NOAO/AURA/NSF

NGC 7000 is a diffuse nebula in the constellation of Cygnus whose shape bears an uncanny resemblence to the North American continent. It measures 3° x 2.5° and is listed as shining at magnitude 4. This figure is deceptive, however, as it reflects the brightness which would be apparent if all its light were concentrated into one point. In reality, the nebula is much fainter than this although it should be visible in binoculars from moderately dark skies.
It can be found some 3° East of the bright star Deneb and is believed to be located approximately 1600 ly away
